Exposing theHidden Costs

Every Canadian business owner has stories about red tape. We aggregate them into a searchable database that reveals patterns and priorities.

The Red Tape Tracker is the Canadian Freedom Institute's crowdsourced platform for documenting the real-world regulatory burden facing Canadian businesses. By collecting and cataloguing specific examples of regulatory obstacles—permits that take months, contradictory requirements, compliance costs that dwarf the underlying activity—we build an evidence base that transforms abstract policy debates into concrete, actionable reform agendas.

Every Canadian business owner has stories about red tape. The restaurant that needed seventeen permits to open. The manufacturer whose expansion was delayed two years by environmental reviews. The tradesperson who spends more time on paperwork than on the job site. These stories are powerful, but they're usually told in isolation. Red Tape Tracker aggregates them into a searchable database that reveals patterns and priorities.

Our platform allows business owners to submit their experiences through a simple online form. They describe the regulation they encountered, the time and cost involved, and the impact on their business. Our research team verifies submissions, categorises them by jurisdiction and sector, and identifies the specific regulatory provisions involved. The result is a rigorous, credible database that researchers and journalists can cite with confidence.

Red Tape Tracker serves multiple purposes. For policymakers, it identifies specific regulations that impose disproportionate burdens and deserve reform. For journalists, it provides ready-made stories with real business owners willing to speak on the record. For business associations, it supports advocacy efforts with concrete examples. And for the public, it illustrates why regulatory reform matters for jobs, prices, and economic opportunity.

Beyond documentation, Red Tape Tracker produces regular reports highlighting the worst regulatory offenders, estimates the cumulative cost of red tape by sector and jurisdiction, and tracks whether governments are making progress on reform. We name names—both the regulations that need fixing and the success stories where reform has made a difference.
